Spine Injections
Spine injection is a nonsurgical treatment modality recommended for treatment of chronic back pain. Injection of certain medicinal agents relieves pain by blocking the nerve signals between specific areas of the body and the brain. The treatment approach involves injections of local anesthetics, steroids, or narcotics into the affected soft tissues, joints, or nerve roots. It may also involve complex nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulation.
- Lumbar Epidural: Lumbar epidural is a procedure that involves injection of steroid medicine into your back. Epidural injections may be used as a non-surgical procedure for the treatment of inflammation and pain in patients suffering from disc herniation, spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. It can be used to treat inflamed spinal nerves, and can help relieve pain in the arms, neck, back and legs. Patients suffering from spondylolysis and sciatica may also find epidural injections to be beneficial in relieving pain.
- Facet Injections: Facet injections are administered into the inflamed painful facet joints. These are the joints connecting each vertebra of the spine to the vertebra above and below it. Each vertebra has four facet joints, one pair connects to the vertebra above and the second pair connects to the vertebra below. Thus they are present on both sides of the spine from the neck to the lower back providing flexibility and smooth movement to both the neck and the spine.
Facet joint injections contain a strong anti-inflammatory agent called corticosteroid and an anesthetic for pain relief. They are given to relieve pain in the back, neck, arm and leg and even headaches caused from inflammation of the facet joints.
